Frequently Asked Questions

Pelvic Care FAQ's

Getting Started

What is the Pelvic Care Chair / Pelvic Floor treatment?

At Pelvic Care, we use advanced, non-invasive pelvic floor technology designed to strengthen and re-educate the deep muscles of your pelvic floor — the muscles responsible for bladder control, bowel support, core stability, and sexual wellness.

The Pelvic Care Chair uses focused electromagnetic stimulation to create thousands of powerful pelvic floor contractions in a single session — far more than most people can achieve with Kegels alone.

The best part?
You remain fully clothed, there’s no downtime and no surgery involved.

Many clients come to us because they:

  • Leak when laughing, sneezing, coughing, or exercising
  • Struggle with urgency or frequent bathroom trips
  • Feel weaker after childbirth
  • Experience pelvic discomfort or prolapse symptoms
  • Want to improve intimacy and confidence
  • Need support after prostate surgery

Our goal is simple: helping you move with confidence again.

Do I need a consultation before starting?

Yes — and honestly, we believe this is one of the most important parts of your journey.

Pelvic floor symptoms can have different causes, so we begin with a consultation and screening to better understand:

  • Your symptoms
  • Your medical history
  • Your goals
  • Whether pelvic chair therapy is suitable for you

This allows us to create a personalised treatment plan instead of using a “one-size-fits-all” approach.

Can I book a first trial or free session?

Yes — many of our branches offer a complimentary first session so you can experience the treatment for yourself before committing to a programme.

Because each branch operates independently, availability or complimentary first sessions may differ slightly depending on location. Contact your nearest branch to find out if introductory offers are currently available.

Conditions We Support

What conditions can pelvic floor treatment help with?

Pelvic floor dysfunction affects far more people than most realise — and it’s not “just part of getting older” or “normal after babies.”

At Pelvic Care, clients commonly visit us for support with:

  • Urinary leakage or bladder urgency
  • Stress incontinence
  • Overactive bladder symptoms
  • Pelvic organ prolapse symptoms
  • Postpartum pelvic weakness
  • Core weakness
  • Menopause-related pelvic changes
  • Constipation and bowel dysfunction
  • Pelvic and lower back discomfort
  • Recovery after prostate surgery
  • Sexual wellness concerns in both men and women
  • Reduced sensation or discomfort during intimacy

Every body is different, which is why treatment plans are tailored to your symptoms and goals.

Do you treat postpartum women?

Absolutely — postpartum recovery is one of the most common reasons women visit us.

Pregnancy and childbirth place enormous strain on the pelvic floor, whether you had:

  • A vaginal birth
  • A C-section
  • Tearing
  • Forceps delivery
  • Multiple pregnancies

Many moms experience:

  • Leaks when sneezing or jumping
  • A heavy sensation
  • Weak core muscles
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Reduced confidence during exercise or intimacy

You do not have to “just live with it.” Our treatments are designed to help restore pelvic strength and support recovery safely and comfortably.

Can men use this treatment?

Yes — pelvic floor dysfunction affects men too.

Many male clients come to us for:

  • Bladder urgency or leakage
  • Post-prostate surgery recovery
  • Pelvic weakness
  • Erectile dysfunction support
  • Core stability and pelvic health

Pelvic health is not just a women’s issue — and there’s absolutely no shame in getting support.

Do you treat children?

In selected cases, yes.

Some children struggle with bladder or bowel control issues, and pelvic floor dysfunction may play a role. We assess each case individually to determine whether treatment is appropriate and safe.

Can I just walk in?

No — all sessions are by appointment only.

This allows us to give each client dedicated time, privacy, and personalised care.

Yes. We understand that life happens.

We kindly ask for at least 24 hours’ notice where possible when rescheduling or cancelling an appointment.

Pricing & Packages

How much does a session cost?

Pricing may vary slightly between branches and treatment plans.

Most branches have a price structure of R500.00 per session while some offer discounts when taking a full package of six session. Some branches are operated by qualified physiotherapists, biokineticists or doctors and have different price structures as they offer additional therapeutic services.

Your practitioner will explain all pricing clearly before treatment begins.

Do you offer packages?

Yes — and most clients achieve the best results with a structured programme.

A common starting recommendation is:

  • One session per week
  • For approximately 6 weeks

Your treatment plan may vary depending on:

  • Severity of symptoms
  • Your goals
  • Your response to treatment
Do you offer discounts or promotions?

Yes — some branches run introductory specials or seasonal promotions.

Please contact your nearest branch to hear about current offers.

Medical Aid & Payment

Do you accept medical aid?

Medical aid generally does not cover the treatments.

We recommend checking directly with your provider regarding coverage.

What payment methods do you accept?

Most branches accept:

  • Card payments
  • EFT
  • Cash

Payment options may vary slightly by branch.

Treatment Safety & Suitability

Is pelvic chair treatment safe?

Yes — the treatment is non-invasive and generally very well tolerated.

Before starting, we complete a screening questionnaire to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.

Can I use the treatment if I have an IUD?

This depends on the type of IUD.

Hormonal IUDs (Mirena and similar IUD’s) are perfectly safe and suitable, but copper IUDs are contraindicated with this treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Most clients experience little to no side effects.

Some people describe:

  • Mild muscle fatigue
  • A tingling sensation

This is completely normal and usually temporary.

Who should avoid this treatment?

Pelvic chair therapy may not be suitable if you have:

  • A pacemaker or neurostimulators
  • Hip implants
  • Pregnancy
  • Certain heart conditions
  • Medication pumps
  • Active malignancies
  • Genital jewellery

A full safety screening is done before treatment begins.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No referral is needed.

However, if you have medical reports or specialist feedback, you’re welcome to bring them along.

What to Expect

What happens during a session?

You’ll sit comfortably — fully clothed — on the Pelvic Care Chair while the treatment stimulates deep pelvic floor contractions.

Many clients describe the sensation as:

  • A deep pelvic floor “lift”
  • Gentle contractions
  • Similar to doing Kegels… except you don’t have to do the work

There are:

  • No invasive procedures
  • No needles
  • No recovery time

You can return to your normal day immediately afterwards.

How long is a session?

Sessions usually last around 30 minutes depending on your treatment plan.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person.

Most clients find that a 6-session programme is enough to get you back to your best self, but your practitioner will guide you based on your symptoms and progress. In severe cases of prolapse or after prostate surgery clients may need additional sessions.

When will I see results?

Some clients notice improvements after just 2–3 sessions, especially with urgency and leakage symptoms.

For best and longer-lasting results, completing your recommended treatment plan is important.

Symptoms & Outcomes

Can this help with urinary leakage?

Yes — this is one of the most common reasons clients seek treatment.

Strengthening the pelvic floor may improve:

  • Bladder control
  • Stress incontinence
  • Urgency
  • Frequency

Our clients regain confidence to exercise, laugh, travel, and socialise again without constantly worrying about bathrooms.

Can it help constipation?

In some cases, yes.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can contribute to bowel coordination issues. Improving muscle function may support better bowel control and coordination.

Can it help prolapse?

Pelvic chair therapy may help support the pelvic muscles in mild to moderate prolapse cases and assist with symptom management.

However, it does not replace specialist medical treatment when required.

Can it help sexual dysfunction or vaginismus?

Pelvic floor function plays an important role in sexual wellness for both women and men.

Depending on the underlying cause, treatment may help improve:

  • Muscle strength
  • Blood flow
  • Sensation
  • Pelvic awareness
  • Pelvic tension and coordination

A proper assessment is important to determine suitability.

  • Wearing comfortable clothing
  • Avoiding metal accessories near the pelvic area

Your practitioner will guide you through everything on arrival.
